Expanding Our Reach

We’ve been extensively testing to potentially introduce broadcasts on the 31m band. Our ongoing tests aim to gauge the band’s performance, particularly its short skip capability during the daytime in Europe. This close-range efficiency is promising. The good reception reports from our listeners on 12.030 pushing us to explore new frequencies on the 25m band for the upcoming summer, enhancing our broadcasting flexibility.

This weekend, you can tune in to Radio Delta on February 18, 2024, on 6110 kHz from approximately 6 UTC to 9 UTC, and also on 12.030 kHz from 9 UTC to 11:30 UTC.

Over the past week, extensive testing has been conducted with the new antennas. The results have not shown improvement compared to the existing antennas. Not every change leads to enhancement. However, a promising discovery was made that the new antenna provides excellent results on the 31-meter shortwave band. Further testing will be carried out to explore this success. Initial plans to utilize the 19-meter shortwave band in the future have been reassessed due to test outcomes indicating it may not offer optimal coverage across Europe. Continuous testing is underway to achieve the best possible outcome.

We express our gratitude to Harri from Oulu for the consistent and enjoyable musical contribution to the ‘Finnish Request’ program, airing from 6 UTC to 7 UTC.

In other news, Radio Monique has recently launched the 1332 kHz mediumwave frequency. Progress has been made with the installation of a new antenna last Saturday, February 17th. At Radio Delta, our team has been conducting a series of experiments to understand and compare the performance of shortwave radio transmissions. In this blog, we will share with you our findings and the insightful discoveries we’ve made along the way.

We have put together a series of videos that showcase the comparison between the 25-meter shortwave and the 49-meter shortwave. Through these demonstrations, we aim to illustrate the differences in transmission quality and reach between the two bands.

Transmission Details:

– **Radio Delta**: Frequency – 12.030 kHz, Power – 1000 watts (PEP)

– **Radio Mike**: Frequency – 5980 kHz, Power – 1600 watts (PEP)

– **Radio Continental**: Frequency – 5810 kHz, Power – 400 watts (PEP)

One of the key insights we’ve gained during our experiments is the impact of power on transmission strength. We observed that a doubling of power results in only a 3dB increase in strength. For example, if Radio Continental were to use 800 watts, it would be 3dB stronger.

In one of our videos, we demonstrate the significant difference in reception quality within a distance of 750km from Elburg, France. This highlights the impact of frequency and power on the reach and reception of our transmissions.

Interestingly, we found that during the daytime, the 25-meter band often provides clearer reception even at a distance of 500 kilometers. This unexpected observation has sparked further exploration into the specific conditions under which each shortwave band excels.

The entire journey of conducting these experiments has been a learning experience for us at Radio Delta. Our enthusiasm for testing and our commitment to self-built solutions have driven us to understand the nuances of shortwave transmissions, and the outcomes have exceeded our expectations.

Furthermore, our testing on the 20-meter band has continued this past week. We are working towards broadcasting on this band in the future. With the help of dedicated listeners like Patrick Travers from Sheffield, we are evaluating the best frequency to ensure regular transmissions. During these two Christmas days, we will be playing a selection of songs every hour to honor our loyal listeners from the past year. We want to celebrate and share some memorable moments together.

This is the radio news bulletin for December 23rd and 24th, 2023. There have been no technical adjustments made to the transmitters or antennas, and we feel that we are currently able to reach all of Europe with occasional signal strength reaching far beyond Europe. Just last week, we received a message from Chris Mackerell in New Zealand.

Once the weather improves, we will make adjustments to the antennas for 12.030 kHz. You can find updates on our website, and we will also create a blog about the progress.

Over the past few weeks, we have been busy preparing for our Christmas broadcasts on the 25th and 26th of December.

These broadcasts will be filled with delightful surprises for our listeners, including beautiful music and our regular program segments. We hope that our listeners will also share their stories in the future to encourage more interaction.

Last week, the weather in the Netherlands was very poor, with a severe storm bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Fortunately, our antennas did not sustain any damage.

On December 24th, you can also tune in to Radio Telstar (see photo) on 6045 kHz from Nauen, Germany. The Radio Telstar broadcast will begin at 12:00 UTC and continue until 14:00 UTC.

This is the radio news bulletin for December 16th and 17th, 2023. We are getting closer to our Christmas show on December 25th and 26th. In this show, we will look back on the past year with our listeners at the center.

This weekend is dedicated to our Finnish listeners, who are very active and tune in every weekend. We now have a WhatsApp group of 36 listeners from Finland. You will hear a story from Risto from Finland, who used to have his own radio station called Radio Meteor. We will also share a beautiful poem from Harri from Oulu. He listens every weekend and is a big fan of the radio show “Finnish Request.” The poem reflects on the special friendships that arise through shortwave radio.

We are working hard on developing our new antennas for the 12.030 kHz frequency. We hope this will further improve reception in Europe and especially over slightly longer distances.

The Christmas tree is already up in the studio, and we have bought some lovely gifts for our team members: Emily, Dan, and Thomas. It takes a lot of time to create new content every week to share with you. They manage to make something beautiful each week.
